Action
This department of the institution sought candidates who fit the background and clinical model required to become part of the staff. Per the comments of the Chief Executive Officer regarding these searches, “Arthur | Marshall understands the complexities of hiring clinicians in an academic setting.” As part of its mandate, Arthur | Marshall was required to locate a diverse group of candidates. The task was to attract candidates who bring a wealth of academic training and background as well as clinical and diverse personal and ethnic backgrounds to round out the staff.
Our team immediately began to leverage a national network of established physician relationships as well as engage our internal advertising agency to locate a small pool of target candidates.
We leveraged our proprietary 6 step Arthur | Marshall process to develop a customized Skills/Experience screening matrix to certify a candidate’s qualifications for these unique academic positions. For obvious reasons, a focus was placed on academic experience with a demonstrable skill set and clinical training among the best in the nation.
We spent an inordinate amount of time focused on finding the correct candidate and not just several candidates. With the time allotted to recruiting being somewhat limited for the client, we advised the client to focus on an “up front” approach to the process. We focused with our client on not just being a vendor “for” the client but instead being a partner “with” our client. This required additional screening time for the candidates, spouses and families. As noted by the Regional Vice President at Arthur | Marshall, “When relocating for a position like this, we were in essence relocating a business, a family and potentially even a spouse’s occupation in addition to fitting the candidate into an opportunity that matches for both client and candidate.” All of this was accomplished to essentially off load as many of the responsibilities as possible from the client onto the Arthur | Marshall staff—again the concept being to operate as an extension of the client.
Impact
2 searches were completed in a timely fashion leading to 8 additional successful search assignments.
Of the 10 total successful searches conducted as part of the project, 5 were Family Practice, 2 were Geriatrics, 2 were Pediatrics and 1 was Endocrinology (all were different departments.). It must be noted that each specialty search was conducted with essentially a different set of decision-makers which complicated the methodology. This project required all of the experience and background of the senior consultants who were assigned each search. Arthur | Marshall had to draw on it’s over 18 years of experience to communicate properly and to provide the kind of advice for each decision maker to maximize the odds of a successful outcome. In fact, the assignment was led by our most senior consultant with more than 20 years of experience as well as specific success in the academic realm.
