Dental Assistant

The duties of dental assistants, as the name implies, are to provide assistance to dentists as well as specific patient care. However, they are not licensed to do the same responsibilities as dental hygienists. Among their many responsibilities are laboratory, patient support, and administrative work. Those who desire to work as dental assistants in several states must complete a one-year diploma or certificate program.

Dental Technicians

Dental technicians create prosthetics and other appliances to the specifications of dentists. While dental laboratory technicians do not provide direct care to patients, with proper training and certifications, they can become great dentists. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the critical role those dental technicians play in ensuring a person’s dental and general health.

The majority of dental technicians acquire on-the-job training from dental appliance manufacturers. They start as helpers and work their way up to more sophisticated tasks as they gain experience. While some states do not require them to be licensed, the National Board for Accreditation, an independent board founded by the National Association of Dental Laboratories, offers voluntary certification (NADL).

Dental Hygienist

A dental hygienist is one of the closest jobs that could land you a career in dentistry. Preventative dental care is provided by dental hygienists who work under the supervision of a dentist. They usually spend a lot of time with their patients, cleaning their teeth, evaluating their mouths, and teaching them proper oral hygiene.

If you wish to work in this field, you’ll need an associate’s degree from a recognized dental hygiene program. State requirements may also vary in this field since plenty of other states require completing an exam like the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE). That’s why their responsibilities differ depending on the laws of the state in which they work.

Medical Billing Specialist

A medical billing job could be the right option if you’re looking for something that doesn’t require as much time in school. Medical billers collect payments for dental surgeries and treatments. They collaborate closely with insurance companies to compile and submit bills and examine claims. Many dental practices will require industrial experience or a high level of education instead of expertise.
